Duplex Sustainless Steel has a mixed microstructure of austenite and ferrite that has made it famous for being sea water resistant. Compared to austenitic stainless steels, duplex stainless steels have roughly twice the strength as well as improved resistance to localized corrosion. This includes pitting corosion, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. Duplex Sustainless Steels are characterized by high chromium (19–32%) and molybdenum (up to 5%) and lower nickel contents than austenitic stainless steels. There are however several requirements on heat treatment, welding technology, and machining.
